Ever sit and try to remember who starred in what movie or just how tall is so-and-so, or his such and such still married, etc - trivia about movie stars that provides food for conversations? Well, here is a little treasure trove of Hollywood Celebrities presented in concise data pages and accompanied by a caricature of the artist featured on that page. Sati Achath is an established cartoonist ad caricaturist whose images appear in newspapers across the US. He, incidentally, is a hand puppeteer, a ventriloquist and a magician and author - and he combines all these attribute to entertain us in this book HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES BASIC THINGS YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW (Volume 1, please note!).
Achath is not at all interested in the 'dirt' about anyone, he is more interested in giving us a full life picture of a movie star's birthplace, height, marital status, children, Gloden Globe and Oscar nominations (an winners), and movies in which they that appeared. It is a terrific little quick reference volume. As for the artwork, no, these are not photorealistic renderings of the stars involved caricature is an art form unto itself. For instance, what we focus on art Tom Cruise's teeth, Whoopi Goldberg's dreads and glasses, Sylvester Stallone's growly look, and elegant Morgan Freeman, George Clooney's impeccable good looks across the page form Goldie Haw's irresistible laughing face. On each page Achath lists vital statistics, education family, awards, and fascinating factoids.
This is a fun book that should be kept by the television to reference those memory lapses that always occur at least once each evening. Very entertaining and informative. Grady Harp, April 12
I finally got around to reading the book. The caricatures are great, and coupled with the bio information, I've learned a lot about the people we feel are part of our lives, even though we've never met them in person. The caricatures are a nice insight, but the best thing is to have all this information in once place. Its a great effort by Sati Achath and I'm looking forward to seeing the next volume.
I read the kindle edition and was frustrated how the right side of the page is cut off. Maybe if someone shifted it a little so that the entire page is readable, then I might download it again. Great in depth look at celebrities otherwise. I would definitely recommend it
This is a great compilation of celebrities. While enjoyed the personalized caricatures of each person, the information is well known and could be found by doing a basic Google search. I would still buy this book, however, since it does present the information in a new and "different" way. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to keep up with celebrities and likes caricatures.
Shadow Puppet Master and 2008 Quarter Finalist on America's Got Talent, Sati Achath has once again captivated his audience, this time through his book, "Hollywood Celebrities, Basic Things You've Always Wanted To Know" Volume 1.
The book is a collection of expertly drawn caricatures combined with celebrity stories about some of Hollywood's top thespians. His amazing artwork is a spot on match to his magical shadow puppet masterpieces that we all came to love on America's Got Talent in 2008. There are hundreds if not thousands of books that cover celebrities and their lifestyles but none like this one.
As a journalist and radio host I try to remain impartial and very rarely review the books of my guests but this time I will make an exception and say, "this is a must read, fun, hilarious and interesting. I recommend that you rush out and grab your copy today. I was excited to get this book for review, but feel it let me down a little. When seeing the description, it's the interesting factoids that appeals to me. We all want to know what our favorite celebrities are into, what colors they like, what hobbies they have..... that sort of thing. While it had this information in it, I really felt like it wasn't enough. Not personal enough. Strange when you learn of their heritage, birth and education and still feel it's impersonal, but that is my end impression.
I appreciated the information that was given, most of it is common and available knowledge, while a couple things were new to me.
The caricatures were great, very artistic indeed. Though on a few I didn't see the likeness, I still have a couple I think were spot on like George Clooney and Whoopi Goldberg.
The last criticism I have to give is in expressionism. Where the author wrote, "when a child", I would have used, "as a child".
I admit, this is a book I don't think I'll be recommending. It just fell flat for me, sorry.
The book contains facts such as awards each celeb has been nominated for (Golden Globes, Oscars, etc.), where they went to school, and family information along with other basic info and special factoids. Some of the celebrities included in volume one are George Clooney, Goldie Hawn, Jennifer Lopez, Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, and Nicole Kidman among others.
There's no dishy gossip or controversy here, rather you see astrological signs and the educational backgrounds of your favorite stars. This is a great book for T.V. and movie fans who find they often can't recall which movies and awards their favorites got nominated for over the years.
The illustrations are unique and interesting. The caricatures of Daniel Craig and DeNiro are especially noteworthy. Achath has a talent for capturing the eyes and bone structure of his subjects.
Hollywood Celebrities Basic Things You've Always Wanted to Know, Volume 1 is an intriguing look at many of the Hollywood heavy hitters. A fun read for any fan of pop culture.
